my friend Sean just called to let me know that the senior class is planning a “battle of the cover bands” that would most likely take place in January & he has this brilliant idea of creating an Andrew Bird cover band that would be he & I on vocals & guitar probably, backed by an orchestra. playing Andrew Bird songs. this is so exciting. I can’t wait to see how it will all turn out.

& we know that we’ll play the gilmore girls theme, something from mulan, and new slang by the shins.

skinny love is easy to play. i put a capo on the fourth fret, with the open G tuning and it’s so fun to sing. i have to get my little rhythm retardation over with, and work on my D, or a better way to fake a bar chord. i tuned it myself, oh hell yeah, but the E string is a bit weird. whatever i just won’t play it. i’m even going to learn the proper riffs instead of making my own. my callouses are coming back!

i pretty much did everything productive that i possibly could do tonight with the exception of my poems for english.

i love poetry, i really do. i write it all the time at home. i read poetry. i have stacks of it lying around my room. i write it in dictionaries. i write it on my walls. i write it on dollar bills.

but you know what takes the life out of poetry? having to write villanelles/english sonnets/italian sonnets/dramatic monologues about the characters in a james baldwin novel that i didn’t even enjoy reading.

okay. to shower and get to work.
